COVID-19 – Community testing

Wiltshire Council has begun to locally roll out the government’s rapid COVID-19 community testing initiative to help drive down transmission rates.

The programme, in partnership with the Department of Health and Social Care, is specifically aimed at asymptomatic people at small businesses who cannot work from home, and private early years settings and childminders. Eligible people will take a Lateral Flow Test.

This is not to be confused with surge testing. Surge testing is increased testing (including door-to-door testing) and enhanced contact tracing in specific locations in England and is not currently taking place in Wiltshire

The first test centre will open in Devizes on 18 February, and more will follow soon. 

The centres cannot accept people dropping in, and everyone must book an appointment and not have any symptoms of COVID-19. An online booking system will be available soon.

The self-administered test should take no more than 15 minutes and results should be known within half an hour.

Free testing continues to be available to everyone in Wiltshire who has COVID-19 symptoms – high temperature, continuous cough or loss of/change in taste or smell. People should visit NHS Coronavirus or call 119 to book a test in that instance.

Covid Vaccination Update 14th Feb

KAMP are now inviting Group 4 of the priority patient groups for their COVID-19 vaccination – the over 70s and the extremely clinically vulnerable as defined by NHS England.If you are over 70 years old, registered with KAMP and you haven’t got an appointment for your first Covid vaccination yet, please call Reception to book in on 01672 569990. If you have family or friends who are over 70 – please do ask them if they have got their appointment in case KAMP haven’t been able to contact them directly.

If you are a frontline health worker, please contact KAMP to book your appointment. Frontline workers will be required to provide their registration number and employment details to book.

If you are a patient under 70 and you are not a frontline healthcare worker, please wait for KAMP to contact you for your Covid vaccination.

If you have an appointment (or know someone that does) and are having trouble accessing transport to get to your appointment, we can help.

The following transport options are available:

  • your own vehicle, public transport or a private taxi
  • via family, friends or neighbours
  •  the Link Schemes running across Wiltshire 01672 288007
  • rescheduling their appointment to a different time and day when you do have access to transport
  • If none of the above are available, call the Wiltshire Wellbeing Hub on 0300 003 4576 who can help arrange transport

COVID-19 UPDATE 22nd September

NHS COVID-19 App launching this week

The NHS COVID-19 app will launch in England on Thursday 24 September.

In the run-up to the launch, the council is engaging with businesses and venues across the county to provide guidance for those required by law to print and display posters to help users of the app check in and record their presence.

The posters, which display a unique QR code for each setting, can be scanned by the app, which then saves information that can be used to help contact tracers in the event of an outbreak.

Settings that are currently required to keep records of visitors for contact tracing purposes must still maintain their own register to collect the contact details of those who have not, or could not, install the app.

Venues include facilities provided by local authorities and town and parish councils, including town and village halls, leisure centres, libraries, community and children’s centres.

Venues that are required to display the official NHS QR code poster can download and print the QR code posters from the Government website.

Precautionary COVID-19 measures taken at ten schools

The following schools are taking precautionary measures with the advice and support of public health officials after one pupil at each school tested positive for COVID-19. 


St Augustines

160 Year 9 pupils have been self-isolating but returned to school yesterday.

Kingsbury Green Academy

The pupil is in Year 12 and is self-isolating with Year 12 and 13 pupils, 110 in total, and three members of staff for 14 days until 30 September.  

Bulford St Leonard’s School

The pupil is in Year 5 and is self-isolating with year 5 pupils, 35 in total, for 14 days until 26 September. Three teaching staff will also self-isolate.

The Springfields Academy

The pupil, who is in a year group bubble of Years 6 – 8 is self-isolating along with the other 11 pupils in the bubble for 14 days until 29 September.

St Margaret’s Preparatory School

The pupil is in Year 3 and is self-isolating along with Year 3 pupils, 27 in total and three staff, for 14 days until Monday 28 September.

Royal Wootton Bassett Academy
The pupil is in Year 9, and is self-isolating with all Year 9 pupils, 284 in total for 14 days until 25 September.

Avon Valley College
The pupil is in Year 10, and is self -isolating along with  Year 10 pupils, 65 in total, until 21 September. One member of staff is also self-isolating.  

Trinity School

The pupil was in year 4 , and is self-isolating along with year 4 pupils, 28 in total and 2 members of staff

Southbroom Junior

Two pupils in year 6 are isolating. No children sent home as the positive cases had not attended school during their infectious period

Southbroom Nursery

One positive case with 19 children now self isolating.

Statement on Bridgestone British Masters motocross event

A decision has been made that the Bridgestone British Masters Battlecross motocross event in Winterbourne Gunner will not take place this year.

The event wasn’t requested to be cancelled, but assurances were not met that adequate plans were in place for the event to take place while keeping everyone in attendance as safe as possible. Such plans are standard practice for any large-scale event.

Following conversations with colleagues at Wiltshire Council, Public Health, Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust, Wiltshire Police, Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service, and the event organisers the decision has been made that now is not the right time for the event to take place. The health and wellbeing of our communities is our top priority and a gathering of this nature has the potential to undo some of the great work many people have done in following COVID-19 guidance and keeping each other as safe as possible.   

The organisers already have plans for the event to take place in 2021.

As we continue to see outbreaks of Coronavirus across the country we want to do what we can to ensure Wiltshire doesn’t end up with a significant increase in cases.

Any events or gatherings of more than six people, other than those which are exempt, risk increasing the number of infections in the county.

In response to the current situation, Wiltshire Council is strongly recommending local businesses and event organisers postpone or cancel events that are planned to take place in the county during September and October.

If you do become aware of events taking place in your local area, please could we ask for your support in sharing this message to help ensure that together Wiltshire helps reduce the transmission of COVID-19 and continues to keep rates low.

MyWilts launch

The council will be launching its new online reporting system, MyWilts, this week.

The new system replaces the previous MyWiltshire, which was introduced in 2013. MyWilts allows people to report issues such as:

·        Abandoned vehicles 

·        Fraud 

·        Weather emergencies 

·        Fly Tipping 

·        Dog mess 

·        Graffiti 

Over time the council will be adding more services to the app and website, making it simpler, quicker and easier for residents to access council services digitally, when they choose to.  

The new MyWilts will be available shortly via internet browser, App Store (Apple) and Google Play (Android).

Wiltshire Council receives government support to help fund vital work with rough sleepers

Wiltshire Council has received more than £47,000 from the government to continue to help rough sleepers.

The pledge is part of £91.5m allocated to 274 local authorities by the government to help support vulnerable people housed during the pandemic.

The funding will be spent on a range of measures that will continue the council’s work with rough sleepers throughout Wiltshire to provide support and accommodation, and ultimately reduce rough sleeping in the county.

The council is committed to helping rough sleepers in Wiltshire, and has a dedicated outreach team that is working hard to connect with people on the streets and find them suitable accommodation.

If anyone sees a rough sleeper in Wiltshire, please report it on StreetLink or via the StreetLink app; this will direct our teams to help people who need it.

Green Homes Grant Scheme

Homeowners and landlords can now access funding to pay for the cost of energy saving measures under the new Green Homes Grant scheme and businesses are being encouraged to register their services.

The scheme means homeowners can obtain up to two-thirds of the cost of energy saving measures – up to £5000. Lower-income households could be entitled to claim as much as £10,000 to cover the cost.

Home improvements covered by the scheme include insulation of walls, floors and roofs, installation of double or triple glazing to replace single glazing and low-carbon heating. These measures could help families save up to £600 a year on their energy bills.

The scheme supports the council’s Climate Strategy and helps us prepare for the future by protecting the environment and saving money for homeowners through long-term energy savings

Thirty-six year record falls to Wiltshire Council-funded athlete

A Wiltshire Council-funded local athlete is celebrating recent success following the resumption of the 2020 athletics season.

Lucy-Jane Matthews, aged 17 from Salisbury, broke the British 100 metres hurdles record that has been held by British athletics legend Sally Gunnell since 1984.  This now places Lucy-Jane joint third on the British women’s U20 all-time list and in the process, earned her an invitation to compete at the British Championships – where she promptly won herself a silver medal.

To support her on the track, Wiltshire Council has funded Lucy-Jane via the Funding Future Olympians and Paralympians Foundation, first with a Sports Scholarship grant and in the last two years with an Elite Athlete Grant.

The council is proud to have supported Lucy-Jane over a number of years. We know that the council’s Sport Scholarship and Elite Athlete grants make a huge difference providing much needed financial support to athletes as they aim for success on the world stage. The council is looking forward to seeing what Lucy-Jane can achieve in the future.

KAMP Covid-19 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) GP appointments and bookings

The way we access GP services has changed. Below are some frequently asked questions that may help you understand these changes.

Why can’t I walk into my GP practice?

 The coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic has forced us all to work differently to help slow down the spread of the virus. All healthcare settings are taking special measures to protect you, the public and their staff. GP practices are working as hard as ever, but differently.

Where possible we want to avoid people having to wait inside a waiting room together, as we know this increases the risk of the virus spreading. Like hospitals and dentists, we have also had to change how we offer our services to you.

If you do need to come in, then we can ensure there are a minimal number of people in the practice, we can maintain social distancing and keep patients and staff safe.

How do I get an appointment?

The easiest and most effective method is to telephone. You can also book a telephone consultation with a GP through the online booking system, SystmOnline. You will then be contacted by a clinician to talk through your symptoms either over the phone, or if needed and you have the available technology, through a video consultation.

Why can’t I book a face-to-face appointment?

We have adapted the way in which you can get an appointment quickly and safely.

Most patient’s health concerns can be managed over the phone or via video consultation. This is why we are providing you with either an initial phone call or video consultation to decide what would be the best way to help. If we can support you without needing you to come into the practice then we reduce the need for you to travel and reduce the risk of the virus spreading.

If you do need a face-to-face appointment, you will be invited to attend the practice.

If we can ensure there are a minimal number of people in the practice, we can maintain social distancing and keep patients and staff safe.

What if I do not have access to a smartphone or web camera?

While technology has evolved and supports us all in many different ways in our day- to-day lives, we appreciate not everyone will have access to a smartphone or web camera for a video consultation.

We can still talk to you on your mobile phone or landline.

Will I need to wear a face mask if I come into my practice for an appointment?

To help limit the spread of the virus, we are asking for all patients aged 12 and over to wear a face covering when they come the practice. This doesn’t have to be a face mask, but a cloth covering which covers your mouth and nose while allowing you to breathe comfortably. It can be as simple as a scarf or bandana that ties behind the head. How do I get a repeat prescription? 

There has been no change to this system and you can continue to order your medication as follows:

  • On-line facility – you can register for SystmOne Online Repeat prescriptions. Please come in with some photo ID so we can register you for this service.
  • Through the “repeat prescription request” section of our website:

  • Using your most recent counterfoil please TICK the items required and drop them in – there are internal and external post boxes at both sites

Despite the increased demand for repeat prescriptions, we continue to guarantee that a prescription will be ready within TWO WORKING DAYS (excluding weekends and bank holidays) if you are collecting it from the surgery. For those patients collecting their repeats directly from a pharmacy please allow an additional two working days before collection.

How do I cancel or move a booked appointment?

We understand that things crop up and it is not always possible to attend a booked appointment. However, we would ask that if for any reason you are unable to attend a booked appointment, you let us know so that we can offer it to another patient. You can cancel an appointment in several ways as follows:

  • Call the Practice on 01672 569990
  • Online through our website, more than 24 hours before the appointment – kamp.nhs.uk/navigator/cancel-an-appointment/
  • Online through our website using your unique username and password

If you are not able to let us know at the time, we would still appreciate a call later to explain why you could not attend.

We encourage all patients to register for online services in order that they can request repeat prescriptions or cancel appointments at their convenience or when our telephone lines are closed.

How do I prepare for a telephone / virtual GP consultation?

We would advise that you find somewhere quiet and confidential to take a phone call, and advise the GP if you would prefer to talk via video at the start of the call. Not all appointments are suitable for remote consultations and so if you would like to see someone in-person, please tell the GP this at the start of the call and this can be considered.

Please do take some time to prepare in advance, consider what you want to say and key questions you would like to ask. You may find it helpful to note this down in advance of the consultation and have a pad and paper handy to write down any information you are given. At the end of the call, if you are uncertain of what the next steps are, please do ask the GP to summarise.

As ever, only one issue should be raised in each consultation. If you have more than one thing you would like to discuss, please do phone the reception team and ask for a double appointment or book more than one consultation.

How do I see a GP during the evening and weekends?

 For evening and weekend access to GPs please either visit 111.nhs.uk or call NHS 111.

What if I am not registered with a GP practice?

You can call any GP surgery to get emergency treatment for up to 14 days if you are not registered with a GP or are away from home.

If your treatment will last longer than 14 days, you’ll have to register as a temporary or permanent resident. You can find more information about this via www.nhs.uk and search ‘how to register with a GP practice’.

If you are a resident in the area and need to register with a practice, then it’s best to look at practices where your home falls within its geographical boundaries. You can check a GP practice boundary by visiting their website.

Once you have selected which practice you would like to register with, make contact with them either by calling or visiting their website.

You will be asked to fill out a registration form and once it is completed and returned, NHS England will transfer your medical records to your new practice. They will also write to you to confirm your registration with your chosen practice.

What do I do if I think I have coronavirus (Covid-19)?

The main symptoms of coronavirus are:

  • high temperature – this means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back
  • new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual)
  • loss or change to your sense of smell or taste – this means you’ve noticed you cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal

If you are experiencing one or more of these symptoms then DO NOT visit your GP practice. You should visit 111.nhs.uk/covid-19 or call NHS 111 if you cannot get help online.

You must self-isolate for seven days from when your symptoms started. Anyone you live with, or in your support bubble, who does not have symptoms must self-isolate for 14 days from when the first person started having symptoms. You must also ask for a test as soon as you start showing symptoms. You can do this online – visit www.nhs.uk/ask-for-a-coronavirus-test

To all our Patients,

During the last few months, you are likely to have noticed a difference in the way things are being done in general practice as we manage coronavirus (Covid-19).

We want to start off by saying thank you.

Thank you for adapting so quickly to these new ways of working – it has been the drastic, yet fundamental, change needed to ensure the safety of you and our staff.

To slow down the spread of coronavirus, we have worked to reduce the number of people coming into the practice. This has been achieved by using telephone appointments and video consultations.

This is why we ask you to continue what you have been doing to access your GP service.

Please do not visit either of our surgeries without an appointment.

Instead, telephone the Practice or go to the KAMP website (www.kamp.nhs.uk). Reception will make you a routine appointment to speak to the right healthcare professional for your problem, GP, Nurse or Clinical Pharmacist. If your problem is clinically urgent, a triage Nurse, Doctor or Paramedic will call you back on the same day.

If a Clinician does need to see you in person, then you will be given a face to face appointment at one of the KAMP surgeries.

Only coming into the surgery with an appointment means:

  • you will get seen promptly
  • you are reducing your risk of catching/spreading coronavirus by avoiding a waiting room
  • you are helping to keep staff healthy and safe
  • The practice can maintain a clean environment and protect you from the virus

The visiting service, for patients who are unable to leave their home, has not been changed.
